Simulink is an addition to Matlab that provides end-users with a graphical, interactive environment which can be used to model systems, analyze them and subsequently simulate their dynamic behavior. When it comes to modeling, simulink provides a graphical user interface (GUI) for constructing models in the form of block diagrams. One of Simulink’s great advantages is that it can model non linear systems, which transfer functions usually cannot.
Simulink comes with an extensive array of predefined blocks which can be used in making graphical models using simple drag and drop operations, thus creating running models that would, in other environments take hours to make. Since simulink provides frequent feedback and is interactive in nature, students can learn as well as experiment on the go, making it highly user friendly.
In Simulink, the user draws the systems on the screen as block diagrams which consists of numerous elements like transfer functions and summoning junctions. The fact that simulink happens to be matlab integrated, which makes data sharing between the two programs very easy. Simulink was developed by Mathworks, the same group that developed matlab and it is compatible with all major operating systems including Microsoft windows, Linux as well as MacOS.
Simulink has a wide range of applications in industry and technology involving simulation & model-based design. It provides a solid platform for engineering professionals to plan, model and design systems as well as create algorithms. It is also extensively used in automotive industry, aerospace industry, industry automation, signal processing, physical modelling, event simulations, systems engineering and large scale modeling.
Simulink has a plethora of interesting features. It is basically a graphical editor that facilitates constructing and managing block diagrams. It comes with a library of pre-defined blocks for modelling, which makes it extremely time-efficient. Simulink has a dedicated simulation engine with both fixed and variable step differential equation calculators. It also provides scopes and data analysis to aid in viewing results. It comes with project and data management tools for managing model files and data and model analysis tools for increasing the speed of simulations. It has dedicated functions for importing algorithms from Matlab into its own models and also importing codes of C and C++.
Compared to m file simulation, Simulink enjoys a decisive advantage by virtue of it being very similar to hardware implementation. The fact that Simulink’s interface is primarily composed of working block diagrams, makes it extremely easy to read and understand. Also, Simulink is capable of providing the state of the whole system in each given time slot as it is done over time periods.
There are two ways of starting Simulink. The user can either start Simulink through the Matlab command prompt using the command ‘Simulink’ or the user can alternatively click the Simulink option in the top area of the mat lab window. Once this is done, the user can see that Simulink opens up a single window with the title Simulink Start Page. Following this, the user must select the Blank Model option, after which a window shall appear on which the user can start working.
A model in Simulink can basically be defined as a simple block collection. In general, it is representative of a system. The user can either make a model from the scratch or load previously created model files that were saved either from the file menu or, alternatively, using the command prompt. Also, the user can load a file through the 'Open' option present in the file menu or by employing the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+O in Simulink. Also, from the file menu, the user can select the 'New' option in order to create a new model or use the keyboard short cut Ctrl+N.
The two basic elements in Simulink are Lines and Blocks. Whereas in a block the main components are employed in building systems and displaying signals in Simulink, lines are used in transfer of signals from one particular block to another block.
There are various block classes in the library that Simulink offers. Sources are used in the generation of different signals. Sinks are used to display signals. The other kinds of blocks are the Continuous, Discrete, Math operations and Ports and Subsystems. The input and the output terminals of the blocks range from zero to many. The input terminals that are not used are represented by an open triangle whereas the output terminals that are not used are represented by a tiny triangle shaped point.
Lines usually perform signal transmission in the exact direction that the arrow points. The transmission always happens via the output terminal of a particular block to that of the input terminal of a different block. Also, a line may tap off from a particular point in another line, thus breaking the signal towards different destination blocks. A line cannot pass on signal or information to another one and this is always done by positioning a block at the junction.
There are two types of signals, namely, scalar and vector. Vector signals are signals that are basically composed more than two scalar signals. Scalar signals are used for single input whereas for multi input, the signals used are vector signals. Identical lines are employed for the transmission of both kinds of signals and a line’s signal constitution is based on the kind of blocks on the either ends of the line.
A simple model is one that consists of just three blocks, namely, the step block, the transfer function and the scope block. The step block is a block that belongs to the class of source blocks, where the signal originates from. The transfer function is a continuous block and the scope block is a sink block that displays the output signal.
Block modification can be performed by an operation as simple as that of double clicking it. Subsequently, a dialogue box with spaces for the block’s transfer function’s numerator and denominator will appear and the required transfer function must be fed. The change will be reflected in the transfer function’s denominator. A similar method is used for bringing about a modification in the step block as well.
Needless to say, However, when it comes to scope block, the modification process is rather complicated. Double clicking leads to the appearance of an oscilloscope screen which will display the signal that is fed to the scope.
The user must open the scope window through double clicking the scope block prior to the running of the simulation of a system. Then, the user can click on the Run option from the simulation menu, select the play option from the top of the menu or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+T. The simulation runs immediately and window showing the scope will appear as an oscilloscope window.
The first step to building a system in Simulink is gathering required blocks from the library. To gather the required blocks the user has to first make a new model. Then, from the tools option the user has to click on the Library Browser followed by selecting sources from the library browser. Sources are necessary to originate signals. Now, the step must be dragged towards the left of the open window. Now a desired operation can be selected. For instance, Math Operations can be selected and the block called sum and gain can be dragged inside the present model window towards the right side of the step. The users must now click upon the Continuous option and then drag a PID controller present in this library towards the right side of the step block and from this exact library, the block called transfer function must be dragged into the right side of PID block. Finally, from the Sinks of the Simulink window and the scope must be dragged towards the model window’s right side..
Now, the created blocks need to be connected with lines. With reference to the aforementioned steps and the selected operation, the user can select the step block and then use the keyboard shortcut CTRL+ Click upon the block called sum thus connecting them. It must be noted that the resulting arrowhead should be a filled one and if this is not the case, then the fact is, it remains unconnected. When the user wants to delete a particular line, he/she merely has to click and select it and press the delete button on the keyboard. Now a line must be drawn to connect the sum block’s output to that of the gain’s input. Further lines must be drawn connecting the gain and the PID block, the PID block and the plant. Lastly, connect the plant and the scope. The last line that one needs to draw in the current system is a feedback signal that will connect the plant output to the sum block’s negative input. Owing to the lack of an output terminal for emanating from, this line must tap off from a pre existing one. In order to do this, the user can, from the endpoint of the incomplete line he/she dragged off from the negative portion of the sum block, click and drag one to the line that lies between plant and scope. Finally, by double clicking on the desired points, the user can label the block adequately.
Lastly, the user must save the model by standard procedures and can run the simulation by following the methods discussed above.
